The Organic Lawn Mower
December 5, 2009Our first place was a trailer. My husband and I didn't mind. We were in love and rent was cheap! After two years and two kids we finally ventured out and got our first home. When we moved into our first home, we also moved into the responsibilities of being homeowners. Which, as we all know, includes the wonderful world of mowing! This is not one of DH's favorite pastimes. He works a lot, so thats the last thing he wants to do when he comes home or has a day to relax. And me, well, I'm usually pregnant, enough said. Knowing our distaste for mowing (even though we have a decent working one in the garage) we bought some goats, within the first few weeks of moving into our home nonetheless!
I have to admit, I was a little hesitant at first. I mean seriously, I did not grow up on a farm. Although I've been dreaming about it, researching it and hoping for this day- the reality, is, well, a little different than what you read and see in the movies! So when DH and my 2 year old son show up with our first two goats one day I didn't know what to expect. "Is having goats eat our grass really going to save us time and money?" Is all I could think. And, well, continue to think as I sneek out back while my two toddlers are napping to give the goats fresh water or chase after a loose one. But it is. It is worth it. Having the kids grow up with goats and other farm animals is so worth it in my opinion. ( this coming from a girl who had nothing more than a hamster for a pet growing up!) The memories they'll have, the lessons they'll learn, it is worth it. The funny thing is, once people found out we had goats they starting giving more to us! It was great! More ground to cover, more grass to be eaten and less to be mowed! But not only that, we could start breeding, raising and milking! I have to admit, the birth of the baby goat on our farm was priceless! So, all this said, if you have the time and patience (and zoning!) go for it. Go goat over lawn mower!
